The pattern of pain may be a clue to the underlying cause.

Tension headaches typically come on slowly and develop as a symmetrical tightness or pressure around the head. There may also be abdominal pain or behavioural problems.

Migraine is more likely to be one-sided, with visual problems, vomiting and abdominal pain. Often there's a family history of the condition.

Headaches due to raised pressure in the skull typically get worse with lying down and may be associated with vomiting first thing in the morning.
